LANDOVER, Md. -- Andy Reid referenced Nelson Mandela, Sporting Kansas City and mangled a metaphor about the Chiefs recent losing streak. Mike Shanahan looked like a beaten man, one who might be counting down his final days with the Washington Redskins. That was no thin line separating winning and losing when the Chiefs beat the Redskins 45-10 Sunday. It was a chasm. The Chiefs (10-3) broke their three-game skid by doing what they did so well during their 9-0 start -- beat up on a bad team. They scored on their first four possessions, sacked Robert Griffin III five times and Kirk Cousins once, and returned both a punt and a kickoff for a touchdown in Sundays 45-10 rout. All of which prompted Reid to go off-topic, even in his usual monotone. "Sporting KC, Im telling you its hard to be a champion right? And they did it. Im proud of those guys," said Reid, referring to the team back home that won the MLS Cup on Saturday. "I didnt mention Nelson Mandelas death the other day, but what a tribute to mankind he is." OK, but what about getting back on track after two losses to the Denver Broncos sandwiched around a defeat to the San Diego Chargers? "Its tough to lose three games in the National Football League, three consecutive games. It seems like a year, those are dog years as you would say -- each week that you have a loss in the NFL," Reid said. "For the guys to come back and rebound after that, I was proud of that." Across the way, the Redskins were their usual drama machine. They lost their fifth straight, and the stadium was virtually empty in the second half. Its already far from certain as to whether Shanahan will return for a fifth season, and now theres a report that he was close to quitting last year because of his relationships with owner Dan Snyder and Griffin. "Its not the right time or place to talk about my relationship with Dan Snyder, or its not the right time and place to talk about something that happened a year ago," Shanahan said. "Ill get a chance to talk to Dan at the end of the season, and Ill give some viewpoints from me, and Im sure hell give me his thoughts and what direction well go." Shanahan did concede that Sundays loss -- the Redskins fifth by double digits this season -- was his fault. "I didnt have the players ready to play," Shanahan said. The first quarter was so lopsided that nearly all the footprints in the snow were on one side of the 50. That discrepancy was quickly corrected when the teams changed sides. The score was 38-10 at halftime. Quintin Demps immediately answered the lone Redskins touchdown with a 95-yard kickoff return that resembled at times a winter stroll, part of a stunning tally of 321 return yards by Kansas City in the first half alone. Alex Smith completed 14 of 20 passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns. Jamaal Charles ran 19 times for 151 yards and a score, and his 35-yard, right-then-left scamper was a highlight of the second half. "You gotta go out there and play no matter what kind of conditions outside," Charles said. "Sleet, snow -- you gotta go." Tamba Hali and Tyson Jackson each had a pair of sacks, and Derrick Johnson set up a touchdown with a 40-yard interception return. Dexter McCluster took a punt 74 yards for a score and set up another TD with a 57-yard return. Fans mostly deserted Washingtons first snowy home game in decades, and those that stayed had plenty to boo. The Chiefs took the opening kickoff and gained 8, 9, 22 and 13 yards on their first four plays. The Redskins were a team with nothing to play for, and they looked like it. Shanahan eventually pulled the plug on Griffin, inserting Cousins for the final quarter. "Its a terrible game to be a part of," Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo said. "This is definitely a big game," McInerney said Thursday. "Its exciting. "There are still a lot of games left in the league where we can pick up points. We have to go in and get the three points if we want to make ourselves known in the league." After a successful 95-game career with the Union, the 22-year-old was traded to the Impact in April, four games into the 14 Major League Soccer season. McInerney has scored nine goals in all competitions for the Impact, including three in the Amway Canadian Championship. In his first game against the Union just two weeks after the trade, McInerney was kept off the scoresheet in Montreals 1-0 victory. "He needs to make his mark on the game," goalkeeper Troy Perkins said of the striker known as Jack Mac. "We want him to feel that hes an important player here. "He has to go over there with a chip on his shoulder to that stadium and show those people wrong." All signs point to McInerney starting against the Union. FAS, McInerney was an unused substitute as manager Frank Klopas kept striker Marco Di Vaio on the pitch for the entire match. The Impact (3-13-5) is looking to build on that 1-0 defeat of FAS on Tuesday, the teams first win in five weeks. Montreal, last in the MLS Eastern Conference with just 14 points from 21 games, is on a six-game losing streak in the league. "We have to remain on a high," said Impact defender Hassoun Camara after Tuesdays win. "Thats the only way our play will build and develop. "We need to grow, even when its hard to do. When were hurting, its tough to perform technically. We might be stronger technically than some other MLS teams, but we need to start with a better desire to win." Added captain Patrice Bernier after the nail-biting victory: "Confidence will come one day at a time. We have to build on our win. We simply have to focus on the positives. Those positives will give us energy. When you lose, you remove all that good energy. Its all mental." The Union (5-8-9), undefeated in its last four MLS matches, has made a few personnel changes since McInerney was sent north of the border for forward Andrew Wenger. On Wednesday, Philadelphia signed Algerian international goalkeeper Rais Mbolhi, who may make his MLS debut versus the Impact. Once match fit, Mbolhi will replace Phillys Zac MacMath as the starter. And at the start of this week, just before the end of the MLS transfer window, defender Carlos Valdes signed a multi-year deal with Philadelphia. The Colombian international returns to the Union after a year-and-a-half absence that included loan spells in his native country and Argentina. Up front against the Impact, Philadelphia will look to goalscorers Sebastien LeToux and Connor Casey, who both have two goals in their last four games. "Theyre going to come out and theyre going to high press us from the beginning," said Perkins, who will likely be in net after backup goalie Evan Bush earned the clean sheet in the Champions League on Tuesday. "Its their house, they want three points to move up in the standings but we want three points as well, just to close the gap. "Its a team thats fighting right now. They dont have the best quality, but they fight and compete. And thats where we have to match them. We have to let our quality take over. This team is big, strong, athletic, and we have to match that." Montreal will also need to regain its scoring touch, having scored just five times over its six-game losing streak with none coming from McInerney. Since joining MLS, the Impact has had success against the Union. After losing the inaugural encounter in 2012, Montreal has since beaten Philadelphia four times in six games (4-0-2) but hasnt won on the road this season.
