WASHINGTON -- Washington Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman is making progress in his recovery from a fractured right thumb, fielding groundballs and taking batting practice before a game against the Miami Marlins. Zimmerman said he felt good after Wednesdays workout. Hes been on the disabled list since April 13, one day after he injured his thumb diving back into second base on a pickoff. Manager Matt Williams called the workout "a stepping stone" for Zimmerman and did not reveal any timetable for a potential rehabilitation assignment. He said the team wants to avoid any setbacks with the 29-year-old star. Zimmerman fielded grounders at first base and also been working in left field. Williams hasnt ruled out Zimmerman playing any of those positions. The Nationals have lost five of six and are hitting .195 during the slide. Left fielder Bryce Harper is still on the disabled list because of a sprained left thumb. Vargas then equalized in the 87th for the first of his two goals.QPR certainly did not deserve to lose. We were lucky to get the win, but we showed tremendous character, Rodgers said. We were a bit better in the second half but QPR definitely deserved something from the game.Despite its third straight defeat, QPR manager Harry Redknapp saw many positives but thought his team should have played out for a draw at the end.Thats the best Ive seen the team play since Ive been here, Redknapp said. Everywhere I thought we were fantastic. Today we went after them all over the park and we won our battles in 90 per cent of positions but in the end we got done for being naive.QPR started best and Charlie Austin had the games first meaningful opportunity in the 9th. After forcing his way into the penalty area, his first shot was saved by goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and from the rebound he could only find the side netting.QPR continued to press forward and midfielder Leroy Fer was twice denied bby the crossbar in the space of five minutesHis first effort cannoned off the top of the bar in the 27th and, after his second attempt, Austins follow up was cleared off the line with Mignolet stranded.ddddddddddddA lacklustre opening period for Liverpool saw captain Steven Gerrard curl a shot just wide in the 44th.The visitors improved after the interval and should have taken the lead in the 62nd but for an erratic attempt from Balotelli. After Adam Lallanas initial shot was parried by goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, the striker blazed over from six yards out with the goal unguarded. Those frustrations seemed to have been quelled when Dunne put through his own net after quick thinking from Raheem Sterling. A rapid free kick caught QPR offguard and Glen Johnsons cross was accidentally sent into his own net by Dunne.QPR drew level for the first time when Vargas directed Austins header into the net, eight minutes after his introduction for Bobby Zamora. However, Coutinho struck in the 90th, bending a shot beyond McCarthy after being fed by Gerrard.Vargas responded with his second in the 91st after his near-post header edged over Mignolets goal line, before another own goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time handed Liverpool the points.Sterling broke away down the right before his attempted cross for Balotelli was cut out by Caulker. Despite intercepting the pass, Caulker managed to guide the ball into the net to the disbelief of players and supporters. Were still in shock to be honest. We were very lucky today, said Gerrard. The only credit we can give ourselves is that we never gave up.The win lifts Liverpool into fifth place on 13 points while QPR remain bottom of the table after collecting four points from their opening eight matches.
